Preview files and cell values

Petti 1.4 · User documentation

Finder previews describe the database file. Cell previews help you inspect a particular value inside it.

Preview a file in Finder

Install Petti in Applications, select a SQLite database in Finder and press Space. The Quick Look extension shows table names, counts of tables, views and indexes, file size and modification date. Choose Open with Petti to browse rows. This is metadata, not a full table preview or an integrity check.

Preview a cell in Petti

Select a grid cell and press Space. Available representations depend on its contents. Raw and Hex help inspect text or bytes; recognized JSON offers JSON Pretty and JSON Tree. Supported image contents can show a thumbnail. Other recognized structured values and interpretations appear only when available.

Previewing does not rewrite the cell. Formatted JSON and interpreted dates or numbers are views of the value, not evidence that the original bytes were changed. Large numeric identifiers should be checked against Raw because JSON number interpretation can lose precision.

Partial previews and saving

Previews have byte, parsing and display limits. If Petti reports a partial or truncated preview, it has not shown the whole value. Hex output is also bounded. Use table export when you need full contents. Save Bytes… preserves fetched bytes; do not treat a partial preview as a complete export.

PDF support is a bounded summary rather than a full document viewer. HTML is inspected as content; previews do not run scripts or fetch remote resources.

Optional plugin previews

Enabled plugins can add entries under Plugin Preview for supported complete text or BLOB values. Install or enable these through the Command Palette; they are not required for built-in previews. If a plugin fails or a value exceeds its input limit, use the built-in representation instead.
