Getting started with Petti

Petti 1.4 · User documentation

You can browse SQLite files without an account, a database server or an editing license.

Install and open

  1. Download Petti 1.4.0 for Apple silicon. The app requires macOS 14 or later; Intel Macs are not supported.
  2. Open the DMG and drag Petti to Applications. For an update, quit Petti before replacing the existing app.
  3. Launch Petti from Applications. macOS may ask you to confirm opening an app downloaded from the internet, even though this release is signed and notarized.

Open your first database

  1. Choose Open Database… on the welcome screen, or File → Open… (⌘O).
  2. Select the main SQLite file, commonly ending in .sqlite, .sqlite3 or .db. Do not select its -wal or -shm companion.
  3. Choose a table in the sidebar. Petti opens a genuine read-only connection and fetches rows as you browse.

A .db extension does not guarantee SQLite. Petti does not open SQLCipher-encrypted files. Keep companion files beside a live database; see live database inspection.

Find the rows you need

Use Search current table or ⌘F, click a column heading to sort, and use the filter control for column conditions. Active search and filters appear above the grid. Clear All removes them while retaining your sort. “No matching rows” means the current conditions found nothing, not that the table is empty.

Switch between Data, Structure and Query for rows, schema and SQL. The Query view runs SQL, not sqlite3 shell commands such as .tables. Cancel a query if it takes too long. A loaded-row count is not necessarily the table’s total row count.

Open another file

File → Open Database in New Tab… (⌘T) opens another database. Use the native Window menu’s tab actions when you want a separate window. Each database has its own editing state.

When you need to edit

Read-only browsing, search, exports, read-only SQL and Finder Quick Look are free. A Petti 1 license enables editing, CSV import, schema changes and write queries. Open Petti → License… to activate the key from your purchase, then deliberately unlock the database. Petti 1 purchases include 1.x updates; see license details.
